What is Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to self- healing

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that recognises how stress, trauma and early relational experience live not only in the mind but in the nervous system itself. The body develops its own ways of surviving — the tensing of fight, the urge to flee, the stuckness of freeze, the collapse of submission and the pull toward others when inner safety feels out of reach. These responses are the body's intelligence, shaped by what it needed to do to get through in the past.

Trauma-informed simply means we prioritise safety, pacing and choice throughout. Nothing is forced and your body sets the rhythm.

In sessions we become curious about these patterns rather than trying to override them. We slow down, notice what the body is doing and bring a quality of presence to what has previously been met with pressure or avoidance. Over time this supports a genuine reconnection with sensation, emotion and your own inner signals — not through effort or insight alone, but through the lived experience of something different becoming possible.

Who this work is for

Many of the people  I work with are deeply self-aware, yet feel something essential is missing. This work is about restoring that missing sense of connection from the inside out. You may understand your patterns, you may have insight, you may even know why you feel the way you do. And still, your body remains tense, numb, frozen or exhausted. Trauma-informed somatic therapy offers a different way - one that works with the nervous system, not against it. This is slow, body-based, relational work for those who are ready to come home to themselves.

The work itself

Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapy

Every session is responsive to you and to what your nervous system brings on that day. There is no fixed agenda and no expectation to narrate your history or relive the past. We work with what is present — what the body is doing right now, what it is holding and what it might be ready to meet.

This might involve slowing down to notice sensation, breath or subtle shifts in the body. It might involve becoming curious about a pattern of tension, withdrawal or shutdown — not to analyse it but to be with it differently.

Where appropriate, and always within an established therapeutic relationship and with your full consent, sessions may include NeuroAffective Touch — a gentle, relationally-somatic informed approach that works directly with the nervous system through attuned physical contact. It offers the body a different quality of experience, one of being met rather than managed, that can reach what words and reflection alone sometimes cannot. It emerges gradually, when the relationship feels ready and when your body begins to signal that a different kind of contact might be welcome.
