What is functional freeze?

Functional freeze is a nervous system state where you continue to function outwardly, working, caring, achieving, while feeling internally flat, numb or disconnected. Many people in functional freeze describe feeling emotionally distant from themselves, chronic tension or fatigue, difficulty knowing what they want or need, high-functioning anxiety or over-responsibility and a sense of “going through the motions” rather than living.

​This guide may be supportive if you identify as sensitive, high-functioning or over-responsible, feel emotionally numb, shut down or disconnected. Maybe you live with chronic stress, overwhelm or anxiety, or struggle to feel your body or emotions clearly. You've tried therapy or self-help but still feel stuck and searching for a nervous-system-led approach that feels safe and slow. You don’t need to diagnose yourself or label your experience. This guide simply offers language, understanding and a gentle place to begin.
