Nervous System Regulation: What It Really Means (And Why It Changes Everything)

“Nervous system regulation” has become a popular phrase. But what does it actually mean? At its simplest, nervous system regulation is your body’s ability to move between activation and rest without getting stuck.

Most of the women I work with are not lacking insight. They are lacking regulation.

What dysregulation looks like

You may experience anxiety that feels constant, emotional shutdown, difficulty resting, overworking until burnout, panic without obvious cause, or feeling “on edge” even when nothing is wrong.

These are not mindset problems, they are physiological states.

The Polyvagal Lens

Through the lens of polyvagal theory, we understand three main states:

  1. Ventral (safe & connected)

  2. Sympathetic (fight/flight)

  3. Dorsal (shutdown/freeze)

Many high-functioning women oscillate between sympathetic overdrive and dorsal shutdown. Somatic therapy works bottom-up. We build ventral capacity first.

How nervous system healing actually happens

It happens through repeated micro-regulation, safe relational connection, embodied awareness, gradual exposure to emotion, or reducing internal threat responses. Not through willpower.
