There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing too much. It comes from being disconnected from yourself. You might be functioning, working, caring and showing up. But something feels muted, flat, distant and hard to access.
If you’ve been wondering whether you’re disconnected from yourself, here are some signs to look for.
10 Signs You Are Disconnected From Yourself
You struggle to identify what you’re feeling.
You default to “I’m fine."
You feel emotionally numb.
You overthink instead of feel.
You feel exhausted even when you rest.
You struggle to access joy.
You people-please automatically.
You avoid stillness.
You feel disconnected from your body.
You feel like you’re “watching” your life.
Disconnection is not a flaw. It’s often a protective adaptation.
Why Disconnection Happens
Disconnection often begins early. If your emotions weren’t met with safety…If you had to grow up quickly…If you learned to be useful instead of authentic… Your nervous system adapted.
It prioritised survival over presence. Over time, this can create what I often see in clients, (in-person and online), a form of functional freeze. Outward competence. Inward disconnection.
How to Reconnect (Without Forcing It)
Reconnection begins with safety. Not intensity. If you're looking to reconnect with yourself, your mind, your body, try this:
Pause. Place one hand on your chest. Notice your breath. Ask gently, “What’s here?” No analysing. No fixing. Just noticing.
If you’d like more structure, my free 5-Step Micro Pause guide offers a gentle starting point. If you’re looking for deeper support, I offer online and in-person somatic therapy in Beverley, East Yorkshire, you can book a free consultation call, or 1:1 session, here.
Reconnection doesn’t require a breakthrough. It requires consistency.
