Somatic Exercises for Trauma: Gentle Body-Based Healing That Doesn’t Re-Traumatise

When people search for “somatic exercises for trauma,” they are often looking for something very specific. Not another explanation. Not another theory. But relief. And importantly, relief that doesn’t overwhelm their system further.
As a trauma-informed somatic therapist based in Beverley, East Yorkshire (and working online across the UK), one of the most common things I hear is: “I’ve tried talking about it… but my body still reacts.”
That’s because trauma is not only stored in memory. It lives in the nervous system.
Why trauma lives in the body
When something overwhelming happens, especially if there was no support or safety available, the body completes a survival response. Fight. Flight. Freeze. Appease.
If that response doesn’t fully discharge, it remains active beneath the surface. Years later, you might experience:
Sudden anxiety
Emotional numbness
Hypervigilance
Shutdown
Chronic tension
Feeling easily overwhelmed
And it can feel confusing, especially if you “know” you are safe now. The mind moves on. The body takes longer.
The problem with forcing trauma release
There is a misconception that trauma healing requires dramatic catharsis. Crying for hours. Revisiting memories intensely. “Breaking through.” For many nervous systems, especially those with functional freeze patterns, this can retraumatise rather than heal.
Somatic healing is slower. And safer.
4 gentle somatic exercises for trauma
These practices support nervous system healing without overwhelming the body.
Orientation: Slowly look around the room. Notice: Light, colour, shape, space. This signals to your nervous system: "I am here. I am safe.” Orientation strengthens present-moment awareness, essential for trauma recovery.
Pendulation: Notice something neutral in your body (perhaps your hands). Then briefly notice an area of tension. Then return to the neutral area. This gentle back-and-forth builds emotional capacity without flooding.
Micro-Movement: Instead of analysing emotion, notice if your body wants to: Shift, stretch, roll shoulders, or take a deeper breath. Trauma often traps energy. Micro-movement allows it to complete safely.
Co-Regulation: Trauma rarely happens alone. And healing often requires relational safety. This is why in-person somatic therapy (available in Beverley, East Yorkshire) can feel especially grounding for some clients. The nervous system settles more easily in safe presence.
Online sessions are also available.
